How Important Is The Word?
I believe that everything begins and ends with the Word. In the first chapter of John, it states that “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus (the Word) said “I am the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Here we see that Jesus is the Word of God. The Word is the final authority for everything in life. Jesus Christ is King of kings. (Rev. 17:14) Every king has a domain, hence the term kingdom, or king’s domain. Everything and everyone in a king’s domain belong to the king. (The earth is the LORD'S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Psalm 24:1) In a kingdom the king’s word is law. Therefore, the Word of God is the law of God. Luke 4:4 says that “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God,” or by every law of God. So we live by the Word of God- our natural and spiritual life depend on it. It must be (or He must be) the basis and measure of all things in our lives.
We have much good teaching today about the Grace of God and I agree with this essential message. I believe that as John 1:17 says, “…grace and truth came by Jesus Christ”. John 1:14 says “…the Word (Jesus) was full of grace and truth”. Since Jesus (the Word/Law) is full of grace and truth, then grace was given, not to remove or replace the law (word), but to compliment and perfect it. The importance that God places on His word is shown in Psalms 138:2 “for You have exalted above all else Your name and Your word and You have magnified Your word above all Your name!” (Amplified) Jesus plainly said in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I have come to do away with or undo the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to do away with or undo but to complete and fulfill them.” (Amplified) Likewise, Christ has extended His grace to empower us to fulfill the law just as He did and as stated above, to live by every word of God. Jesus gave explanation in Matthew 22:37-40 that the whole law is summed up in the first two commandments- which some have termed “the law of love”- and that is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
Grace empowers us to live by the Word. Let us make the Word our focus, our guide, our daily bread- it is our life. Begin and end your day with the Word.
